Dear Holy Spirit

Should we pray to the Holy Spirit?  Some would say no.  They may cite Matthew 6:7-13, where Jesus taught his disciples how to pray - He told them to pray to “Our Father in heaven” (not the Holy Spirit).  But we should remember that Jesus never said this was the only way to pray.  As well, we should remember the three-fold doctrine of the trinity:  God is three persons; Each person is God; There is one God.  Therefore, communing or praying with a particular person of the Godhead (the Holy Spirit for example) is communing with God and, therefore, acceptable and beneficial.

Joseph Hart was an 18th century pastor and hymn-writer from London.  He wrote the popular hymn “Come Ye Sinners” in 1759.  He also had no problem praying to the Holy Spirit.  He wrote the following hymn and it’s a great example of how we can pray to the Third Person.

Come, Holy Spirit, come;

Let Thy bright beams arise;

Dispel the darkness from our minds,

And open all our eyes.

Cheer our desponding hearts,

Thou heav’nly Paraclete;

Give us to lie with humble hope

At our Redeemer’s feet.

Revive our drooping faith;

Our doubts and fears remove;
A
nd kindle in our breasts the flames

Of never dying love.

Convince us of our sin;

Then lead to Jesus’ blood,

And to our wond’ring view reveal

The secret love of God.

Show us that loving Man

That rules the courts of bliss,

The Lord of Hosts, the Mighty God,

The Eternal Prince of Peace.

’Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,

To sanctify the soul,

To pour fresh life in every part,

And new create the whole.

Dwell, therefore, in our hearts;

Our minds from bondage free;

Then we shall know and praise and love

The Father, Son, and Thee..

  1. I really like the hymm that you shared. When we pray, sometimes we pray: God I come to you or Jesus I come to you now with an open heart or when we give praise it is normally verbalized to God or Jesus. Yes God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit are one. We just don't hear many prayers verbalized to the Holy Spirit. Yet the Holy Spirit is our intercessor, especially during those times when we are unable to put words to what is going on in our heart. So it does make since to me that it is okay to pray to the Holy Spirit because when we pray we are praying to all three entities.

  4. Greetings Erik Meyers,

    Scripturally, there is simply NO reference to praying to the 'holy spirit'.
    And we must abide with Scripture.

    Jesus the Messiah, our Lord and Master taught us to pray to the ONE GOD his Father.
    (e.g. Matt. 6.8ff, 7.11; John 15.16, 16.23, etc)

    Therefore, on the subject of
    "God is three persons";
    I recommend this video:
    The Human Jesus

    Take a couple of hours to watch it; and prayerfully it will aid you in your quest for truth.

    Yours In Messiah
